Why should consumers trust it?
The Guarantee has been developed by suppliers working with Government and consumer bodies
Signatories of the Guarantee have their performance against its standards relating to the commitments regularly scrutinised to ensure compliance
Applications are vetted by an Independent Chair of the Governance Board which Government and Citizens Advice are invited to attend.
What is it?
The Guarantee is a set of 10 commitments developed by energy suppliers who are signatories, to promote:
customer confidence in the switching process
customer understanding of the switching process
customer willingness to switch.
The Energy Switch Guarantee commitments
All energy providers use the same wires and pipes, therefore your energy supply will not be interrupted.
The switching service is free.
The switch will take no more than 21 days from the date your new provider receives your completed application.
Your new energy provider will not need to visit your home to complete the switch unless you agree otherwise.
Your new energy provider will arrange the switch, including contacting your current provider to let them know you are leaving.
Your new energy provider will send you details of your new energy supply agreement for you to check and you will have 14 days to change your mind. If you cancel in this time, you will stay with your current provider.
Your new and current providers will work together to make sure you are not charged twice for the same energy.
If there are any problems making the switch, your new provider will contact you as soon as possible and will be responsible for putting the matter right.
Following the switch your current provider will send you a final bill no later than six weeks after the switch.
If your current provider owes you any money, they will refund this to you no later than 14 days after sending you the final bill.
Why is it required?
Despite there being many suppliers offering a host of products, services and prices there are many customers who have never switched supplier.
The Guarantee aims to provide reassurance to customers to enable them to engage confidently in the switching process.
Why would a supplier sign up?
Customers, particularly those who have never switched before due to concerns or uncertainty around the switching process, will look to switch to suppliers that are signed up to the Guarantee.
The Guarantee Administrator works with energy switching sites to increase consumers’ awareness of the Guarantee.
How do I find out more?
Want to Switch to ScottishPower?
Switching to us is a simple 3 step process and should take about 3 weeks to complete.
We’ll keep you informed of your progress by e-mail or letter. But you can also track your switch anytime using your Welcome Tracker in your Online Account.
Step 1: Switch underway
We’ll send you a welcome letter in a few days with information about your new ScottishPower account as well as your contractual and tariff information.
We’ll estimate your supply start date. If you’re switching both gas and electricity, these may progress at slightly different speeds. Remember you can track your switch at any time through your Online Account.
We’ll set up your Online Account where you can track your switch and, in one handy place:
see your account and tariff information,
give us your opening meter reading and
view the documents we’ve sent you
Log into your Online Account using the username and password we’ve emailed you or Register for an online account using your account number, postcode and an email address.
If you have a prepayment meter, we’ll send you a new key for your meter. Please use the credit on your existing key before you use the new one.
Step 2: Meter reading required
We’ll ask you for meter readings around 5 working days before we start supplying you with gas or electricity, and you can submit these through your Online Account or by calling our free, automated 24hr service on 0800 027 5002.
We need these meter readings to set up your ScottishPower account accurately.
We’ll also send these readings to your previous supplier so they can send you their final bill.
How to read your meter
Step 3: Switchover complete
We’ll let you know once your switchover is complete.
You’ll be able to continue to manage your account online. You can enter your meter readings, view your bills, change your tariff, see your energy consumption and payment history, view all the documents we’ve sent you and find out about ways you could save energy.
