Economy 7 Smart Meter

posted by JohnFoord | A year ago

When my Smart Meter was fitted eary in 2019, I was told that Scottish Power did not have any meters that accounted for Economy 7, but that would be dealt with in the near future.

I am still unable to view my Economy 7 usage and I now require Scottish Power to arrange the fitting of the suitable meter for my property, so I can view my electricity consumption properly

Re: Economy 7 Smart Meter
@JohnFoord. Hi. I think you are talking about the display unit not the meter.
I don’t think the displays can handle a day and a night rate but they will measure total kWh units. None of the displays are very reliable with costs and they often have the wrong tariff details.

Re: Economy 7 Smart Meter

Yes, indeed, the display unit.  However, how can I even be sure that the Economy 7 usage is being transmitted, or even if the Economy 7 meter is still there?  I read about people who have found out that their Economy 7 meter had been removed durinhg the Smart Meter installation.

Scottish Power say they are 'working on it' but other companies are installing dual rate systems, so the technology exists.

@JohnFoord   I understand your worries. You can ask customer service if they are getting two readings correctly. 0800 027 0072.

Re: Economy 7 Smart Meter

Forget smart meters they wont save you money - are a fire hazard a security nightmare waiting to happen and are unreliable - just watch Bigclive on youtube give you the rundown on one and why you should not go with them.

None of the suppliers have standardised on them so it can also make switching a nightmare but then that is their game isnt it - trust no 1 dude stay with what has worked for years - i work in IT security and I would never have a smart meter!

Re: Economy 7 Smart Meter

Until late last summer I had a regular Economy 7 meter, but was switched to the Smart Meter but no longer hear the switching click at night or in the morning.
1. My first question is when are the switching times, as they are different by 1 hour between winter and summer. One season the switch is at 12:00 to 07:00, and the other is 01:00 to 08:00 but I can't remember which is which. I've asked ScottishPower and they haven't bothered to answer me.

2, My second question is has anyone else found they are paying more for their electricity on a Smart Meter, my monthly Direct Debit has suddenly jumped by £20 using the same tariff as the old mechanical meter.

@Raffaello    Nobody knows for sure, you are safe between 1am and 6am though.

The meters record the same as conventional meters but send readings more frequently so SP can adjust your DD every month depending how much you use. The DD should go down again when the warmer weather arrives.

Re: Economy 7 Smart Meter
I was told the new smart meter would be able to give both day time and night readings, hence I said yes to having it installed. A year on, I still can't get economy 7 night readings. Several calls made to Scottish Power and still waiting. A real hassle, dealing with incorrect billing every month.

Re: Economy 7 Smart Meter
The switching times will appear to be later in the summer because we put our clocks forward, whereas the Economy 7 meters stay on GMT.
i.e. in your case, your meter is programmed to give the Night Rate from 12:00 to 07:00 GMT all year round, which is 01:00 to 08:00 BST.

The exact times vary between the different supply regions; mine is programmed for 12:30 to 07:30.

Re: Economy 7 Smart Meter

No so smart unfortunately , the display unit is poor and the meters .

I have LESS functionality now than I had with the dumb meter avoid

The whole point of economy seven is to use as much of your electricity in the off peak time    !!  So why doesnt it differentiate between peak and off peak no   It just gives you a total figure used for the day , totally useless . I cant even look at the meters and read off them now , also no indication of  economy seven times ?  on the old meter I could at least view the wheels goungf arounbd to determine.

I had asked several times for a meter , and was chased for ages although the meters werent suitable .

Now I recieve one and find out it is not fit for purpose , can anyone  please anwser my questions , given up on the phoneline...
