@mec  It sounds like your electric meter is sending readings but the gas meter is not coupled to it, they might be too far apart to communicate with each other. Neither of them depend on the IHD Display to send data, the display can be turned off if it is not useful within the house.  So now you have to send gas readings, it’s a common problem but a lot of people live with that situation. The electric meter does all the communication and both the display and the gas meter are coupled to it.

I have asked for/ordered a smart meter 3 times, but no-one ever showed up.

I have even called and asked why so they put me on the list for a meter to be fitted but nothing happened. 

I had assumed that there might be an issue with first and second-generation meters, but they said they only fitted 2nd gen. 

So it looks like this is all part of a general syndrome.

@mikeparsons   Hi, read all the messages on this Community, there is a definite pattern, SP's installation and management of smart meters is not working well.  Wait until you have switched to a more reliable supplier before having smart meters put in, British Gas is recommended because they employ their own fitters and their IT system works quite well.

Hi.it took me 7 months to get an account number, then hit with a bill for 500.on estimated readings,now been waiting over a year for smart meters to be commissioned, still no display in post,,Been through ombudsman, who sided with sp,,
My mental heath has declined,now 80 less uni credit,,can't take much more,,utterly useless company.

Wow how I wish I had read these before I had my dum meter fitter!  I had mine fitted back in  June 2021 after 2 missed appointments. The Gas has never shown on the meter! Despite being told it would. The electric does which is a good thing because we use top up on that but the gas we have a monthly bill. Due to their incompetence I send the readings in every month around the same time so it does not get out of hand, we only have our pensions coming in like a lot of you so could not manage a large bill landing on the mat!.

I e-mailed the managing director Andrew Ward, who arranged for A Helen Clayton from the Chief Excutive Office to contact me and help. I am sure she tried, but she didn't get anywhere, because after her first e-mail on the 26/10/21 and goodness knows how many others I have here from her it's still not showing the Gas! Oh but one thing it can do is take Smart Reading!!! So if it can take a reading why can't I see it on the Smart Meter Box.  I have had three news sent to me and they are all the same!
like so many of you I wish I had never every gone with Scottish Power or every been convinced that a Dum Meter was a good idea!!!!

Similar story for me as well. I moved into a new (to us) house in May 2021 which had smart meters on both gas and electric. The house we left had smart meters on both which worked great (installed through E.ON).

Have been on estimated meter readings since we moved in, meters were never commissioned. After spending about ten hours on the phone last October I was eventually given a number to call to arrange for them to be commissioned… when I called it I was told they are a third party and will only arrange an appointment with someone at SP directly, will not deal with me!

Just got my monthly email from SP to provide meter readings today which reminded me how annoying this is, having smart meters but still having to provide the readings manually anyway, defeats the point I think.

Our IHD has never worked either, not since we moved in. Absolutely hopeless.

When I phoned SP to tell them the electric meter wasn't transmitting the data I was told my Smart Meter was on a 'White' list, even had an employee phone up and talk me through the process to sort the issue out.  This didn't work, still waiting for the phone call from the engineer to finally get the meter working.  So still manually entering my electric reading,  I just had to laugh when I changed over to a new pricing tariff- I need a Smart Meter installed doesn't say anything about it actually working
